iPage Review

0

iPage was founded in 1998 and hosts over a million websites across two data centers in the US.

iPage’s single shared hosting plan is among the cheapest we’ve reviewed at $1.99/mo for three years. They also have two WordPress-based plans with a few extra features like SiteLock and automatic malware removal.

Default plans come with unlimited bandwidth and disk space, a free domain name for the first year, and a free SSL certificate.

We’ve been closely monitoring iPage’s performance, and crunching the numbers to provide this unbiased review.

But is iPage good enough to get our recommendation?

Read on to find out.

Pros of Using iPage Hosting

iPage is extremely inexpensive when you sign up for the first three years. Their customer support is friendly. Furthermore, they have access to just about every tool or open-source app that you could want.

Here’s a complete rundown on all of the positive things we liked about them:

1. Cheap, Inexpensive Hosting

iPage has consistently been one of the cheapest web hosts we’ve reviewed over the past few years.

And it seems like every so often, they find a way to discount the starting price even further.

Currently, the iPage starts at $1.99/month. The value, as you’ll see in a minute, is good, too. They only have one shared hosting plan, so nothing is ‘held back’ to try and force you to upgrade.

The only catch is that you’ll have to pay for three full years upfront to get that $1.99/month price point.

Otherwise, the regular (read: “renewal”) rate is $7.99/month.

If you’re only paying for a single year, the introductory pricing is $2.99/month (with the renewal at $9.99/month). And if you’re paying for two years, instead of three, it’s $2.49/month (or $9.99 renewal).

Whichever term length you choose, the price is good enough to put all of their initial plans among the best value-per-dollar we’ve seen.

2. Lots of Third-Party Applications

As mentioned, iPage’s ‘core’ offering is solid. Here’s a brief rundown of everything you get for that $1.99/month.

All hosting plans come with a free domain registration for the first year. This saves you ~$15/year right off the top.

You’ll also get a free email address and SSL certificate, too. Each email account is branded for your domain, and includes email forwarding, autoresponders, spam filters, virus checking, and even POP3/IMAP accounts so you can set everything up with Outlook.

This plan comes with unlimited disk space, ‘scalable’ bandwidth (meaning mostly unmetered), and unlimited MySQL databases. Not too shabby.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use, drag-and-drop website builder, iPage has one that comes with six pages and hundreds of templates.

iPage has tons of popular open-source apps ready to install as well. That includes content management systems and blogging software like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, PixelPost, b2evolution, Gallery2, and ZenPhoto photo galleries, plus Gbook, phpBB, and SMF forums.

If you’re looking for full-fledged e-commerce stores, iPage also has these. AgoraCart, OpenCart, OSCommerce, PrestaShop, Zen Cart, and TomatoCart are all included. They can even help you with PayPal integration to accept money online if you’re a first-time webmaster.

3. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

iPage has a no-questions-asked 30-day refund policy. Simply let them know within the first month that you’re not happy and they’ll gladly give your hosting money back.

Like other hosts, however, domain names and additional services are usually not refundable.

iPage gives you a free domain name for the first year. So if you ask for a refund, a $15 fee to cover the cost of the domain name will be deducted. The good news is that you will still own the domain name and can move it or ‘point’ the domain to another hosting company somewhere else.

4. Friendly Customer Support

iPage offers customer support through an online help desk and ticketing system. They offer tutorials if you want to try and fix the issue quickly by yourself. Otherwise, they also offer phone and chat support.

Cons of Using iPage Hosting

iPage’s pricing is among the cheapest and they have pretty good customer support.

Unfortunately, some of their other performance statistics don’t fare as well. Let’s take a look:

1. Poor Uptime of 99.76%

iPage has a lot of features to like. However, none of them are really worth anything unless your site is reliably online and open to your visitors.

That’s why one of our favorite performance tests is to track uptime performance. We use a period of 6-12 months, so we can rule out any one-time problems. Then, we can objectively compare these uptime results against other hosting service providers to show you exactly how one host is better than another — no bias included.

Sadly, iPage has delivered a 99.76% uptime average with 426 outages and a total of more than 10 hours of downtime over the last 6 months.

Last 6-month average uptime:

  • April 2022: 99.60%
  • March 2022: 99.78%
  • February 2022: 99.95%
  • January 2022: 99.71%
  • December 2021: 99.88%
  • November 2021: 99.99%

However, the good news is that iPage claims to offer 24/7 uptime monitoring. That means the customer support team will immediately be notified if a site goes down.

2. Slow Loading Time (1910 ms)

Over the last 12 months, iPage’s loading times have been increasing, delivering an average of 1910 ms speed. That’s more than three times slower than our fastest host – A2 Hosting.  So iPage definitely has room for improvement in that area.

Why is fast page loading time important?

Studies have shown a correlation between fast page speeds and higher conversion rates. Lower page speeds have the opposite effect: lower conversion rates and revenue.

3. Lots of Extra Fees for Additional Services

It’s true that iPage’s core offering is solid. You basically get unlimited storage and bandwidth, plus access to dozens of different popular apps.

You also get a free domain for the first year, an SSL certificate, and an email.

The first additional fee that pops up is the renewal rate down the road. A renewal rate of $7.99/month isn’t terrible – we’ve seen others well over $10+/month.

However, it’s when you combine this with a few other additional fees that your pricing starts to snowball.

Some of the premium hosts we’ve reviewed include things like extra security or backups in their basic plan. iPage keeps their main plan cheap by not including these features, and instead of having you pay more for them if you want them.

This à la carte pricing is perfect for people who don’t want all that extra stuff. But it’s not for those who hate being nickel and dimed.

So here is a list of the different add-on fees.

iPage offers SiteLock support on their plans to help scan for malware and prevent your site from being hacked. Pricing starts at an additional $3.99/month for 36 months for the basic automated offering. They also have more comprehensive plans that increase in price to $24.99/mo (billed at $899.64 for the three years).

Backups can be either daily or several times a day. These are useful to simply keep a record of past versions of your site when changes are made. Or, if your site was ever hacked, you can roll back previous ‘clean’ versions.

The basic backup service is $2.27/month for three years for one website, database, and daily backups.

Then, there’s also the migration cost…

4. No Free Site Migrations

Most of the 40 web hosts we’ve reviewed will move an existing site to their servers for free. This is especially nice if you’re not a technical person and don’t want to waste time trying to figure out how to move site files, re-point your domain, and more.

iPage, however, does not offer any free site migrations. Instead, they will only move a site for a $150 one-time fee. That’s on the high side, compared to other hosts.

5. No cPanel (vDeck)

Most web hosts use cPanel as a dashboard of sorts. It’s the industry standard, and if you use it in one place, you’ll know exactly where everything is when you log into it in another place.

iPage doesn’t use cPanel, going instead with an alternative called vDeck, which is not quite as robust as cPanel.

For beginners, this isn’t always that big of a deal. It’s usually more of an issue for people who are used to working on the same uniform platform. It can seem like a waste of time to learn a new platform and how to efficiently use it when you have already mastered that on another platform.

So this is not a huge deal if you haven’t used either cPanel or vDeck before. However, it could be an issue if you’re a cPanel devotee.

6. It’s Not Really “Unlimited” (Better for Smaller Sites)

Most of the features listed on iPage’s shared hosting plan are “unlimited.”

Of course, nothing is truly “unlimited” in this world. The same holds true here, too.

But first, some good news:

There are no ‘overage’ fees for using a lot of resources like disk space, assuming you’re using it correctly within iPage’s terms.

However, there are a few resource limits to keep in mind. Accounts with tons of files or large databases aren’t a great fit, because they can start to affect other users on the same servers. This means that iPage reserves the right to shut your account down.

Now, we’re assuming they would give you some kind of heads up before just shutting your site down. But their terms do state that they can do so “without notice.” So just keep that in mind.

Most users with smaller sites have nothing to worry about. If your site starts to get really big, you might need to start looking for other hosting alternatives like managed hosting, VPS, or dedicated servers.

Do We Recommend iPage?

Yes, we do sort of. But there are better options available.

There’s a lot to like about iPage. You can get lots of third-party apps and good customer service at a very cheap cost.

However, there were a few mixed performances, especially regarding uptime and speed. Also, the core plans have good features but don’t come with the most ‘extra’ options.

Interserver Hosting Review

0

InterServer has been offering affordable hosting solutions since 1999. Initially focused on reselling web hosting, the company expanded to offer VPS, dedicated, and shared hosting. All plans come with an extensive suite of features and an emphasis on technical perfection. They ensure optimal performance and dependable uptime, as well as professional support around the clock. Curious to see how it stacks up against rivals, we conducted an in-depth InterServer review. Read on for our findings.

Key Features:

Unlimited domains

Unlimited storage & transfer

Free website migration

SitePad website builder

Price-lock guarantee

Excellent support

Strengths:
  •  Strong uptime
  •  Good speed
  •  Price-lock guarantee
  •  Robust security
Weaknesses:
  •  Non-intuitive website
  •  Not ideal for large traffic
  •  Limited money-back guarantee policy

Reliable Hosting Services at Affordable Prices

Many users come to InterServer.net for the low prices and stay for the quality the company offers. While Interserver reviews indicate that there’s room for improvement, generally, the platform offers amazing features at low prices. Let’s take a look at the most notable ones.

Redundant Data Servers

The company’s main data centers are located in New Jersey, and all their components are fully redundant. They have on-site security around the clock and implement enterprise-grade redundancy — all dedicated servers are secured with SuperMicro equipment in Tier 3 and 4 facilities. Additionally, all facilities are climate-controlled, making sure that the temperature and humidity are optimal for the hardware.

Robust Network

During our InterServer review research, we learned that the company has a robust network powered by 10 Gbps Ethernet and connected to several Tier 1 IP providers. It also uses routing and switching equipment by Cisco, Riverstone, and Extreme Networks, ensuring maximum performance. The BGPv4 routing protocol along with the N+1 network upgrade policy ensure fast routing with the lowest latency. Compared to Hostinger, InterServer wins in terms of speed. Hostinger reviews show that even the speed of the premium servers isn’t up to the expected level.

99.9% Uptime Guarantee

InterServer provides a 99.9% uptime guarantee. If they fail to keep their promise, all clients will get credits of up to 50% off the month’s cost of the chosen hosting plan. According to InterServer reviews, uptime is the main reason why businesses trust this hosting provider.

SitePad Site Builder

SitePad is not as robust as the top-ranked site builders on the market but it does a good job. You can choose from more than 300 slick themes and customize the site by adding text, graphic, and other elements.

Free Migration

The free migration for the cPanel servers is another notable feature. All migrated sites are examined for malware and if anything is found, it’s cleaned manually.

Access to 450+ Free Scripts

InterServer.net offers over 450 free scripts for Linux hosting only. Additionally, there are more than 150 scripts for Windows hosting as well.

Tight Security

Many InterServer hosting reviews indicate that users love the company’s robust security features. First of all, there’s free SSL and automated weekly backups included with all plans.

The proprietary InterShield tool meanwhile provides multiple layers of protection against malware. This tool is included in all plans, which is surprising considering that many hosting providers would either include basic security features or try to upsell you a premium defense option.

Additionally, you have access to the ModSecurity application firewall, as well as Imunify360, the automated security solution with multi-layer defense architecture for Linux based web servers.

Another notable security feature is the PHPmmdrop which limits the actions website code and scripts can take when running a server. Last but not the least, the Guaranteed Email Delivery means each email will be checked against a database of known spam signatures before it gets delivered.

Reliable and Responsive InterServer Support

From the reviews on the web and our own experience with InterServer, it’s clear that the company has a great support team. They are available 24/7 via phone, live chat, or email. Fast, responsive, and knowledgeable, the customers praise the team’s ability to quickly sort any issue.

Money-Back & Price-Lock Guarantee

With web hosting providers having a tendency to renew the plans at a higher rate than the introductory offer, InterServer’s price-lock guarantee is refreshing. This means that you’ll always pay the same monthly fee as when you sign up.

InterServer.net offers the industry-standard 30-day money-back guarantee for shared hosting accounts only. The InterSever VPS, dedicated, and quick server plans aren’t eligible for a refund after the server has been deployed.

InterServer Hosting Plans & Pricing

Our review covers the platform’s different solutions in detail. From shared to dedicated hosting, there’s something for everyone’s budget.

Standard Web Hosting

The standard InterServer web hosting is the perfect option for sites that are just taking off and deal with light traffic. The default OS is CloudLinux, and all plans include unlimited ULTRA SSD storage, global content caching, unlimited FTP accounts, access to 450+ cloud apps, free SSL certificates, InterInsurance, and InterShield protection for free.

Additionally, you get access to advanced email features like Guaranteed Email Delivery, unlimited forwarders, WebMail access, spam filtering, and outgoing SMTP. You don’t get a free domain, but you can buy one at a discounted price of $7.99/year.

As all plans come with the same features, they only differ in terms of the billing period:

  • Month-to month payment — $5/month
  • 6 months — $28.50 ($4.75/month)
  • Yearly — $54 (4.50/month)
  • 2 years — $102 ($4.25/month)
  • 3 years — $144 ($4.00/month)

Dedicated Hosting

Highly praised in InterServer dedicated server reviews, these packages allow you to completely customize the server’s hardware with a wide range of resources. You can choose the plan based on your server’s CPU/hard drive/memory combination, OS, and GUI-based control panel. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll get 5 IP addresses, a transfer rate of 10TB, 100MB or 1GB port, and free data migration.

  • Xeon E3-1230v2 (4 cores) — from $80/month — 8GB memory and 2,000GB hard drive

  • 2 x Xeon Silver 4110 (16 cores) — starts from $270/month — 32GB memory and 2,000 GB hard drive

Reseller Hosting

No InterServer hosting review could go without a detailed analysis of the reseller plans. There are five different options for reseller web hosting differing in the amount of disk space appointed and the maximum amount of bandwidth you and your affiliates are allowed to use. All five InterServer reseller packages include access to one-click apps, Web Host Manager, unlimited domains, and MySQL databases running on SSDs.

Additionally, you get all features included in the Standard Web Hosting plans. An important thing to note is that InterServer also provides daily backups. Getting private DNS servers would cost you an extra $3/month, and you’ll have to pay another $3/month if you decide to purchase a unique IP address.

  • RS One — $19.95/month — 80GB disk space, 500GB monthly bandwidth, and 20 cPanel accounts
  • RS Two — $29.95/month — 100GB disk space, 700GB monthly bandwidth, and 30 cPanel accounts
  • RS Three — $39.95/month — 160GB disk space, 1,000GB monthly bandwidth, 40 cPanel accounts
  • RS Four — $49.95/month — 200GB disk space, 1,300GB monthly bandwidth, and 50 cPanel accounts
  • RS Five — $69.95/month — 240GB disk space, 2,000 GB monthly bandwidth, and 70 cPanel accounts

Cloud VPS

Our InterServer VPS review revealed that all of the provider’s plans are affordable and reliable with top-notch speed. They provide high-level resources customization including the CPU cores, storage, memory, and transfer. You get root access with the hosting that grants you full control. The KVM, Virtuozzo, Openvz, and Hyper-v virtualization platforms ensure top-notch security.

Additionally, the Virtual Machine containers prevent your workload from being accessible by other VPS of the same node. Remote backup service, development features, multiple database options (MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, MariaDB, PostgreSQL) are also available. Managed support is offered when you purchase 4 slices or more.

  • 1 core, 2.48GB memory, 30GB SSD storage, and 1TB transfer — $6/month

ASP.NET Hosting

ASP.NET hosting is designed to meet the specific technical and security requirements of the respective framework. During our research for this InterServer review, we discovered that the plans are the same as the ones for Standard Web Hosting — you get unlimited storage, email, and data transfer, and free web migration. Advanced email features, a free SSL certificate, and discounted domain registration are also provided with the plans. The only downside is that you can host a maximum of 25 sites.

Additional Services

InterServer hosting offers some extras that go beyond the traditional offerings of even some of the best web hosting companies.

Email Hosting

InterServer.net reviews show that users appreciate the email hosting option, which lets you create business emails. Starting at $4/month, you get access to all the essential email features including Outlook, webmail, and mobile access, 25GB mailboxes, as well as unlimited aliases, group lists, and forwarding. The Premium Filtering feature, end-to-end encryption, and brute force protection keep your account safe.

Ecommerce Hosting

InterServer’s managed ecommerce hosting solution supports online sale platforms like WordPress+WooCommerce, OpenCart, and AbanteCart.

Webuzo VPS Hosting

This is a premium hosting solution that features the Webuzo control panel. With it, you can easily deploy the software you need even if you don’t have coding skills. Starting at $6/month, the Webuzo VPS plan comes with 1 core, 2GB memory, and 30GB SSD disk space.

Hosting for Students & Non-Profit Organizations

InterServer offers free hosting to non-profits and discounted hosting services for the first year (starting at $4/month) to students.

The Verdict

Our InterServer review shows that, while it might not be the sleekest hosting provider, this technology-focused platform is a good choice for webmasters with moderate traffic. The company offers excellent speed, strong uptime, and a great support team. The tight security measures, the affordable prices, and the price-lock guarantee are additional benefits.

Bluehost Hosting Review

0

There are many Web hosting companies out there, and each one has its pros and cons. I mostly deal with web hosting for WordPress, and when it comes to shared hosting, there are many companies that offer top-notch hosting a WordPress blog.  Bluehost is one such hosting company.

Bluehost has created a name for itself with outstanding server performance & in the past 16 years, they have contributed a lot to the WordPress eco-system. Today I will be sharing a detailed analysis & complete review of Bluehost hosting, and you can decide if this hosting is right for you or not.

Disclosure: When you purchase a service or a product through our links, we sometimes earn a commission.

Being a blogger, I know that some of the things we look for in a web hosting service are:

  • Reliability to keep site always running
  • Affordability so that it doesn’t screw up our budget
  • Support when we face technical issues.
  • Hardware offering to ensure we are using the best server quality

Review of Bluehost Shared Hosting:

Bluehost offers various hosting packages including shared hosting, VPS hosting, WordPress managed web-hosting and dedicated hosting. Bluehost’s shared hosting package is perfect for your new blog & it comes in 3 different packages.

Before I get into detail regarding Bluehost, let me start with the basics. As a WordPress blogger, whenever I evaluate a hosting company I measure its value based on several parameters:

  • Hosting optimized for WordPress
  • Pricing
  • Disk space
  • Email
  • Ease of use
  • Custom Support

I will further explain all this below, allowing you to evaluate whether Bluehost is right for your blog.

Is Bluehost a reliable hosting for WordPress?

My first interaction with Bluehost occurred in 2009 (and I’m still using it in 2020!) when I migrated my client from BlogSpot to WordPress.

Bluehost’s easy installation and nice, simple interface allowed me to install WordPress in less than five minutes! You can read more in this guide on how to install WordPress on Bluehost.

The best thing about Bluehost is that their servers are well optimized for a WordPress blog, and this is one of the reasons they are a top recommended hosting service on the official WordPress hosting resource page (see the above screenshot).

For a reliable WordPress host, apart from running the latest version of PHP and MYSQL, servers should be configured to handle the extra load that typically occurs with WordPress.  I can verify that Bluehost handles it all very well.

In fact, I have seen Bluehost hosting handling traffic up to 20000/day without any downtime at all. (Using Bluehost In-built caching and Cloudflare to speed up my blog, and recommend the same to you.) Moreover, you don’t have to worry about setting up your caching system.

Features of Bluehost hosting:

Free SSL Certificate:

Google is very serious about the security of netizens & this is why they have made an SSL certificate as one of the search engine ranking factor. Bluehost offers free SSL certificate to every new & existing user. This is very important for any blogger who is starting a new site on Bluehost or migrating an existing website to Bluehost.

What I really like about them is; a user doesn’t have to be technical to use the SSL (HTTPS version of the site). Everything is straightforward & makes it easier for them to offer a secure version of the site. It’s definitely newbie friendly.

Bluehost plans and Pricing:

Bluehost shared hosting comes in three different packages, and you can choose the one that is right for you according to your unique needs.

Which Bluehost shared hosting package is best?

  • If you want to create only one website, you should buy the basic package.
  • If you plan to host multiple sites, go with the “plus” package.
  • If your needs who.is guard & site backup pro, you should go for the choice plus package. However, I don’t recommend this package as you can configure the WordPress backup using plugins.

How much does Bluehost cost per month?

Depending upon the plan you pick, it could cost you from $2.95/month to $4.95/month. Since Bluehost introductory price is applicable only on the first term, you should get hosting for 2-3 years term to make most out of this special pricing.

Bluehost Monthly payment option:

Bluehost only offers the following terms for hosting purchase:

  • 12 months
  • 24 months
  • 36 months
  • 60 months

Unfortunately, Bluehost does not offer a monthly payment option. However, here is a few monthly billing hosting.

Bluehost Uptime:

There is one rule of any reliable hosting “Your website should never go down due to hosting issues”.

I have heard mix reviews about Bluehost Uptime, fortunately, my experience on a Bluehost shared hosting package has been pleasant.

Is Bluehost easy to use?

Bluehost uses cPanel, which is so far one of the easiest hosting panels that I have come across. In 2020 they have revamped their dashboard to make it WordPress centric. You can still access cPanel from Bluehost Dashboard, but probably you may never have to use it with a newly advanced Bluehost dashboard.

Just for info, most of the shared hosting companies use the standard cPanel, and you will not find it hard to use. In fact, cPanel makes managing your hosting account easier.  Also, Bluehost is one of very few shared Web hosting companies which will allow you to access SSH.

As I heard, BlueHost are going to constantly upgrade their infrastructure for WordPress. It also makes sense as WordPress is now powering over 27% of the websites in the world. Since Bluehost is now WordPress centric, we can expect superior services in coming months.

In-built caching feature:

Another cutting-edge feature of Bluehost is the inbuilt caching feature. With Bluehost hosting, you don’t need to use any 3rd party caching plugin like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. Also, depending on the kind of website that you have, you can configure the level of caching.

Is Bluehost Customer support good?

Compared to other hosting services, I would rate Bluehost’s customer support as 4/5. You can get in touch with them via live chat, email or telephone. In most cases, resolution time is 20-45 minutes, which is an average support time for any shared hosting.

Since Bluehost servers are optimized for WordPress hosting, you will find that you have very few issues with them. Moreover, they have been in the hosting business for almost 17 years, which is remarkable longevity for any web-hosting company.

In a nutshell, for a cost of $2.95- $5.95/month, Bluehost is a reliable hosting company that is perfect for hosting a small or mid-sized WordPress blog.

Bluehost also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if you are not happy with their hosting, you can cancel your account within the first 30 days and get a full refund!

Privacy and Security

Like many VPNs, ZenMate has a free version and a premium. The free version is rather basic and provides limited server locations and download speeds. However, the premium version is loaded with security features and military-grade encryption protocols. Not to mention other juicy features in the form of browser extensions.

Logging

ZenMate has a close-to-zero logging policy. The company doesn’t track or record browsing activities, IP addresses, and server IPs.

It only collects the most basic data required to operate it servers: Connection timestamps and bandwidth usage. Such information is meaningless to anyone trying to track your online presence, as neither can be used to analyze your browsing and downloading behavior.

Jurisdiction

ZenMate is based in Germany, which is part of what’s known as the 5/9/14-Eyes Alliance. The latter alliance includes a list of fourteen countries that have agreed to share gathered international intelligence. That said, due to its no-logging policy, the company has no data to share on its users, even if requested.

Encryption

This VPN offers three popular protocols: IKEv2, L2TP, and OpenVPN. The configurations are pretty much handled by the app, with minimal user input.

The encryption used is AES-256, which is the most secure protocol available. But it’s worth noting that the browser extensions offered by ZenMate only use AES-128 encryption. This is likely a tradeoff between security and speed, As AES-256 is more secure, but slower to decrypt.

Data Leaks

ZenMate hasn’t been known for any noteworthy data leaks. With the VPN kill switch and DNS leak protection features, this is one of the best VPNs in protecting your online privacy.

It also helps that the VPN comes with additional premium features not available in the free version. These include malware blocking extensions and browser add-ons for tracking protection.

Extra Security Features

ZenMate is a VPN that supports many platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, Linux, iOS, and even Amazon Fire TV. Its range of security features extends to all platforms.

One of the most important is the VPN kill switch that prevents data leaks upon severed VPN server connections.

An ad blocker is also featured in the premium version of the VPN. However, it’s only available as a browser extension and not included with the desktop client.

Due to its OpenVPN support, another thing that makes the VPN an interesting choice is its compatibility with gaming consoles. And also the ability to install it on a router.

Malware blocking and browser anti-tracking features are also available in the form of browser extensions. That said, ZenMate only works well with Chrome and Firefox, which may leave other browser users a bit disappointed.

Speed

As you’ll soon learn, ZenMate is probably not the best VPN for online gamers. The problem isn’t the speed, but rather with the latency. That said, ZenMate was designed to handle torrenting, bypass streaming platform geo-restrictions, with a particular focus on the American and European continents. It also does a decent job with some countries that have tougher censorship policies like Turkey and Pakistan.

An important takeaway is this: ZenMate, as of now, has server locations in 74 countries and around 3,600 active servers. Which gives plenty of leeway when trying to find a good server. That’s especially cool considering that it’s one of the more budget-friendly VPNs.

Local Speed Tests

We were testing Zenmate VPN from Europe on a base of connection of 90 – 100 Mbps.

Local speed tests conducted with ZenMate show great results. ZenMate can reach speeds of up to 84-97Mbps within Europe for both downloads and uploads. The results are similar across European servers, although German servers offer the best speeds. However, there is an issue regarding high latency at times and inconsistent pinging that carried over to our global speed tests.

While ZenMate easily achieves recommended speeds for HD streaming, browsing, and even torrenting, the gaming community might not be too pleased with the high ping situation.

Global Speed Tests

By comparison, Zenmate VPN did not perform well when connecting to the US. We had a hard time exceeding 33 Mbps on our 100 Mbps connection. Global connections also suffer from inconsistent ping.

The good news is that these speeds shouldn’t affect downloads, HD streaming, and browsing too much. But gaming will likely become impossible.

As for all VPN, the general rule holds true: The further away is the server, the higher the speed drop. For example, a server in Australia may only be good for 3Mbps download speed and 3Mbps upload speed.

Features

Streaming

ZenMate VPN performs well for streaming purposes. Partly because of its good speed and ability to unlock some popular streaming platforms. Most notably, Netflix US.

Although it doesn’t yet support Hulu, the VPN can also successfully unblock HBO Go, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer. What’s also notable is that ZenMate comes with dedicated streaming profiles that choose optimized servers based on the streaming platform you want to use.

Torrenting

ZenMate openly allows torrenting on all servers, which is excellent news for the file-sharing community. The app’s website even has some neat guides on safe torrenting.

However, you should be careful if you’re using browser extensions because they can leak data. Instead, use the desktop app for better protection. That’s in addition to keeping in mind the app’s logging policy.

Censorship

Like many other VPNs, ZenMate doesn’t support China. Two other countries with iron-fisted censorship programs are not recommended, namely Iran and Saudi Arabia. Although ZenMate assures that it’s committed to making the VPN work around censorships, it makes no promises.
